Somewhere over the rainbow

I’m spending a lot of grandma time with pre-schoolers these days and I’m having fun introducing them to some of the instantly recognizable songs and artists. Together, we’ve listened to some of the greats – Louis Armstrong’s, ‘It’s a Wonderful World’, the Beatles, ‘Let it be’, even the Radetzky March played by the Vienna Philharmonic at the New Year’s Day concert in Vienna.

Most recently, its been Andrea Bocelli, and his young daughter Virginia, singing, ‘Let it Snow,’ Judy Garland’s, 1939 musical hit from the Wizard of Oz, ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ and ‘The Prayer’. The beloved Italian tenor, Virginia and her brother, Matteo deliver heartwarming musical performances and You Tube Christmas shows that inspire, uplift and bring little girl smiles. Such talent, such enthusiasm and such creativity can be shared easily, enjoyed together and celebrated by us all.

Music which is often a ubiquitous companion for our sing-a-longs in the car on the way to pre-school, dance class, or after dinner in the bath, brings pure joy. Who can’t chuckle and join in when a few of the lyrics from Leonard Cohen’s, ‘Hallelujah’ come spontaneously from a little one in the back seat (in her car seat of course).

Our tune-filled car rides and sessions on the nursery floor are simple times together that bring a sense of comfort and optimism that I will always will hold dear. Music creates a bond between us that’s full of energy, teachable moments, and it’s been said, reduce anxiety, jump-start creativity and assist with recall. After all, seriously, who doesn’t want to wallow in fantasy of “trees of green and red roses too” but for a few minutes day rather than listening to the pundits of doom and gloom that surround us all too often. And, pray tell, what’s wrong with imagining Virginia Bocelli’s blue skies and troubles that melt like lemon drops.

Perhaps some of our dreams really could come true!
