Is Autism really a disorder?

A long smouldering debate among scientists studying autism has erupted. At issue: Language. Are associated features traits or symptoms. Does autism co-occur? Some decry ableist language others have defended tradition. However, the vitriol is harming the field and silencing researchers, some fear but others see it as a long overdue reckoning. Also of note, autistic person is now preferred over people with autism.

Cyberbullying among youth

A recent Statscan report claims that one in four Canadian adolescents say that they have been cyberbullied and that it is taking its toll on their mental health. At the highest level or risk of being cyberbullied are transgender and non-binary youth well as females attracted to other females. According to the report, those victimized online have a greater risk of living with anxiety, depressions, thoughts of suicide and attempts suicide and eating disorder symptoms.

Making music

In the news, MusiCounts, a national charity, has donated $16 million of instruments, equipment and support to of Canadian school music programs over 25 years. President Kristy Fletcher says, “ it’s a fraction of what’s needed. We help one of every five applicants,” noting some educators “teach drums on buckets” Fletcher’s goal: to get  “instruments to kids that need them most,” because music offers so much.”
