Jose feeds the world

This book is the true story of José Andrés, an award-winning chef, food activist, and founder of World Central Kitchen, a disaster-relief organization that uses the power of food to nourish communities after catastrophe strikes. After a 2010 earthquake hit Haiti, Chef José gathered friends, flew in and began cooking rice and beans for the hungry locals. Smart money tips

With developing brains prone to impulsive decisions, teens and young adults may require help with money management. Some concepts may be difficult to grasp, here are a few tips to discuss around the kitchen table:

• It’s wise not to borrow. Talk to some-one trusted before getting into debt.
• Borrow only what you can pay back, discuss how credit works and paying off the balance every month.
• Wants vs. needs – define essentials and optional items.
• Make a personal budget –Show how funds get allocated for bills, food, and other essentials and talk about savings and emergency funds.
• Highlight interest costs – Telling a teen they’ll pay extra when they borrow money may not be effective. Show them examples of how debt accumulates.
• Consequences –Highlight how trouble now may restrict their future financial mobility.
